Bioinspired smart coatings and engineering materials for industrial and biomedical applications
Abstract:
This chapter explores the recent trends in bioinspired coatings and their applications in automotive, aerospace, solar energy, architectural, marine, and biomedical fields. The objective of this chapter is to help readers understand the principals and recent approaches of bioinspired coatings and their possible applications in industrial and medical fields. The development of bioinspired coatings vary greatly from being fairly simple to more advanced and sophisticated techniques. We will focus on four bioinspired coatings and discuss them in detail due to their popularity and increased interest from medical and industrial companies to implement them in many applications. The main interesting properties that can be gained from bioinspired coatings include biodegradable, self-generating, antireflective, self-cleaning, protective, self-healing, and many more. A coating can always be improved to become more advanced to fulfil the requirements of the medical and industrials sectors. Therefore scientists and engineers look for inspiration to develop new materials and astonishing natural materials and processes have attracted the interest of many.
