Biopharmaceutical formulations of liposome-associated desoxyribonucleic acids
Abstract:
In this paper the current development of liposome-based DNA formulations as a biopharmaceutical product is evaluated. The discussion is focused on the commercialization potential of these formulations, results of different clinical trials where they have been tested and features of technologies used for their production. It is also discussed how the intellectual property in this field marks the limits of the commercial development of these liposome-based products. Finally, it is analyzed current trends on the research of liposome-based gene delivery systems, including chemical synthesis of new lipid structures with lower toxicity and higher transfection efficiency, development of new formulation technologies of these lipids, as well as development of the selectivity of action of these liposome-based gene medicines.
