Blood parameters and heavy metal in tissues of sucker mounth fish Pterygoplycthys multiradiatus of orinoco river, Venezuela
Abstract:
In this work, a biochemical and hematol ogical profile and distribution of essential (Cu, Fe, Zn, Ca, Mg, Mo, Mn) and non-essential metals (Cd and Pb) was determined in tissues of fish Pterygoplichthys multiradiatus captured from two lagoons (M1 and M2) in Orl noco River, Tucupita, Venezuela. Metal determinations in tissues, water and sediments were anal yzed usi ng optical emission spectrometer with inductively coupled plasma. Biochemical and hematol ogical parameters in blood samples were determined. Water and sediments in both areas showed metal concentrations close of limi ts for waters and sediments unpoll uted; Fe concentration was inside the permissible lim Its establ ished by water and sediment of Orl noco River. Cd and Pb were undetected in water, but if in both M1 and M2 sediments. The muscle showed Cd and Pb concentrations higher than in other tissues in both M1 and M2 fishes. Metal concentrations in gills were simil ar in both M1 and M2 fishes. M1 fishes showed higher Fe, Zn and Ca concentrations in liver than M2 fishes. M2 fish kidney showed higher Pb concentration than M1 fish kidney. M1 fish showed higher protein and albumin concentrations than M2 fishes; equally, M1 fishes showed lower urea concentration and lower GOT and GPT enzyme activities than M2 fish. M1 fish also showed the highest glucose values. No statistically differences were found in hematol ogical results between both M1 and M2 fishes.
