Blueprint for change
Abstract:
T he recommendations from the preceding chapters provide a blueprint for action for the Latino leadership, the federal and state governments, and the private sector to take to meet America's growing challenge: improving the health status and quality of life of Latinos in the United States. In the fall of 1992, Surgeon General Antonia Novello led the first federal Latino health initiative. Between September 1992 and May 1993, this initiative brought together more than 1000 Latino health experts—researchers, practitioners, community workers, and activists, including almost all of the contributors to this book*—at five regional meetings across the country (New York, Miami, Chicago, San Antonio, and Los Angeles) to focus on developing strategies that would address five major challenges of Latino health:
