Body composition in patients undergoing liver transplantation

Abstract:

Methods: A body composition study was carried out using the bioimpedance InBody S10® in patients undergoing liver transplantation, postoperatively and 1 month after discharge. Several markers were analyzed: appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM), percentage of body fat, phase angle (PA) and extracellular water ratio (ECW ratio). Low muscle mass was considered when the ASM/height 2 was< 7 kg/m 2 in men or< 5.5 kg/m 2 in women; normal PA according to the standardized tables by age and sex and using the cut-off value of 4 o; normal ECW ratio between 0.360–0.390; and normal fat mass in men between 10–20% and in women between 18–28%. Means comparison was carried out using the T-student test for paired samples and the comparison of proportions using the McNemar test. Results: 60 patients (78.3% men) were included. The age was 60.8 (7.5) years. The median stay was 10.5 (5–88) days …
