A pre-feasibility experimental study of using surface-enhanced flake graphite to build up PEFC bipolar plates
Abstract:
The aim of this study is to determine the feasibility of using Surface-enhanced flake graphite (SFG) as a primary filler in an epoxy matrix. The mixture is expected to be used to build polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEFC) bipolar plates by means of hot pressing manufacturer process. Mechanical properties, i.e., flexural and tensile strength, of the samples were measured for different SFG and Nano Graphite (NG) proportions as a secondary filler. It was found that the samples with 40 and 50wt% of SFG in epoxy (EP) show flexural stress values falling between 30 and 19 MPa, and the average tensile stress was 13 MPa. The highest electrical conductivity value found in this study is 1.95 S/cm (with 50 and 10wt% of SFG and NG in EP) which is in the same range of commercial bipolar plates.
