Burnout syndrome in nursing staff of oncology services

Abstract:

Introduction: The demands in oncology nursing services generate symptoms such as stress and emotional fatigue, which can lead to burnout syndrome. Objective: To determine whether oncology nurses have symptoms of burnout syndrome. Methods: Cross-sectional exploratory-descriptive design. The sample consisted of 31 nurses based on intentional, non-probabilistic sampling. The Maslach questionnaire and the in-depth psychological interview were used as instruments for data collection. Results: Moderate scores were obtained in the dimension emotional fatigue, low indicators of depersonalization and high personal fulfillment, which determines the absence of professional burnout syndrome. Conclusions: Despite the working conditions and the arduous working hours performed by nurses in oncology services, we found no manifestations of the burnout syndrome, due to their commitment to their work and profession and their interest in putting their knowledge into practice for the benefit of patients and thus help alleviate their pain.
