CHANGES IN LIFESTYLES DURING THE COVID-19 LOCKDOWN

Abstract:

Objectives. The objective of the present study is to assess changes in food consumption frequency, healthy habits, and risk of developing eating disorders during the COVID-19 lockdown phase. Methods. The sample corresponded to the universal population composed by the Spanish population over 18 years old. The final sample of 252 participants was selected through intentional sampling and data was collected through an ad hoc questionnaire in virtual modality. Subsequently, the data was entered into the SPSS computer program to perform univariate, bivariate and risk analysis. Results. The results showed an increase in the performance of physical activity during confinement, especially in women (p = 0,001); however, the mean hours sitting per day also increased considerably (5,65 ± 2,95 hours up to 7,49 ± 4,20 hours). The percentage of people who did not consumed alcohol increased from 15,8% (n = 39) before confinement, to 36,7% (n = 92) during it. No significant differences were found in the hours of sleep. Regarding eating disorders, a high percentage of people who have binged during confinement was observed (44,6%; n = 113). In addition, better healthy habits were observed at a higher level of education and in rural areas (OR = 2.804 and OR = 3.48, respectively). Conclusions. Positive changes in physical activity and eating habits were observed in confinement. On the other hand, the sitting time increased and a high presence of binges was observed during this period. These results allow professionals to establish clearer guidelines in similar situations. These findings approximate of some changes in lifestyles during confinement in a small sample of the Spanish population. However, future studies with larger samples or analytical would be necessary to establish approach strategies and implement appropriate public health policies in similar situations.
