CIL XII 2058: ECHOES OF VIRGIL AND CATULLUS IN A SHORT GALLIC EPITAPH

Abstract:

This study is devoted to a short Gallic epitaph that has been classified as metrical due to certain resonances from verses by Virgil and Catullus that revolve around similar contexts. The paper includes an updated edition, a philological commentary, and a detailed analysis of the mentioned literary echoes. Finally, it adds some observations on the continued existence of certain verses, either as literary quotes, or as a part of the catalogue of the loci similes.
