Abstract:
INTRODUCTION: Post-mortem toxicology is an important aspect of medical aircraft accident investigation to determine if drugs, alcohol or other substances were present that may have affected the pilot's performance. The purpose of this study is to identify and compare toxicological hazards to aviation safety of first-, second-, and third-class FAA medically certified pilots involved in fatal U. S. aircraft accidents. METHODS: Hazard data on fatally injured pilots, based on a review of FAA medical certification records and toxicology reports, were obtained from the Medical ANalysis and TRAcking(MANTRA) database for CY 2010. Toxicological data were confirmed by comparison with CAMI toxicology reports. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS Statistical Package V. 20.
