A qualitative research to explore gender differences in the elderly
Abstract:
At the primary health level, quantitative studies are more widespread and qualitative approaches are more recent but equally necessary. Undoubtedly, there are multiple problems in this level of care that can be investigated with qualitative techniques, since they need to be valued with deep and specific information of each place. Within the range of problems a subject of special interest would be the study of gender differences in the different stages of life, especially in elderly The objective of the work was focused to identify the variables that could evidence gender differences in Cuba in the third age for which a nominal group was made with experts in the subject selected in turn by experts in the gender theme. The variables identified in order of importance for the experts were the distribution of household tasks, the presence of chronic diseases, the presence of a partner, the loss of the couple, the care of the grandchildren, the exercise of sexuality, the request for medical care, self-medication, current occupation, feelings of loneliness, depression, attitude towards retirement, toxic habits, perception of death, physical and motor limitations, decision making at home, violence, self-perception of health, increased feelings of dependence, self-esteem and selfimage, time distribution, life project and community participation. The variables are in turn encompassed in dimensions: home, health and work, with great importance in the health dimension, which constitutes the fundamental pillar in the third age. Deep studies are recommended in different areas of health.
