Calculating the exergy of industrial solutions

Abstract:

In order to introduce exergetic methods into industry as common practice for plant diagnosis, control and optimization, it is essential to have general, systematic procedures for calculating the exergy of substances of importance in industry. This article develops a procedure for calculating the exergy of a generic mixture, describing the different components of the exergy and relating them to the intensive properties of the system and reference environment. The expressions proposed for this procedure highlight the role of the reference environment and of the activities of the different components of the mix. Application of this procedure to the different flows in a beet sugar factory leads to the establishment of the reference environment of the processes associated with this plant, and gives the expressions for calculating the exergy of all the mass flows.
