Camera-trap discovers the first broad-winged Hawk Buteo platypterus in the Argentine Chaco
Abstract:
Broad-winged Hawk Buteo platypterus breeds in North America and primarily winters from southern Mexico into South America south mainly along the Andes from Colombia to north-west Argentina. We recorded an adult Broad-winged Hawk at Estancia Guaycolec, Formosa province, Argentina, using an infrared-activated camera-trap baited with cat food, during a study of potential predators of Owl Monkey Aotus azarai. This is the first photographic record of Broad-winged Hawk in Argentina and the first documented record for the Chaco biome as well as being the southernmost ever. We speculate that the bird may have used either the Paraguay River or the Pilcomayo-Bermejo gallery forests as landmarks during its autumn migration.
