Abstract:

Objective. Describe the characteristics of the patients after five years of having had radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer diagnosis in the Jose Carrasco Hospital of Cuenca city, with emphasis on the therapeutic response and the frequency of complications. Material and methods. With a descriptive data collected from the medical records of patients who underwent radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer from January 2002 to December 2006 and analyzed the findings on five years of control through the outer query. Results. Of the 264 prostatectomies performed in the Hospital José Carrasco in five years 32 of them were radical for diagnosis of prostatic carcinoma. The average age of the study population was 69,3 ± 8,7 years (49 - 86 years). 71,9% of patients had secondary education (18,8%) and higher (53,1%). The average hospital stay was 5,6 ± 3.27 days (2 - 22 days). 43,8% of patients were hospitalized within 5 to 6 days and 25% more than 7 days. Open prostatectomy (96,9%) was used more than laparoscopic prostatectomy (3,1%). Staging of carcinoma according to TNM classification most frequently reported for grades T1A, T1B, T3A and T3B. (N = 75%). 6.3% of the series had a staging of T4. According to Gleason, the average of 6.8 ± 1.62 says that most of the patients had carcinoma of intermediate aggressiveness. 18,75% had a Gleason score between 8 and 9. Early postoperative complications were the most frequent hemorrhage (15,6%) and urinary outflow obstruction (9.4%). Died before hospital discharge 3,1% of the prostatectomy (n = 1). The mortality associated with radical prostatectomy for this collection reached a rate of 6.3%. Conclusion. The results found in this collection are comparable with published literature. Radical prostatectomy supported by chemotherapy and radiotherapy appear to provide encouraging results for the management of prostate carcinoma.
