Abstract:

This paper analyzes the characteristics and genesis of academic spin-offs in Costa Rica. Having information on this issue is vital to support the decisions that encourage their creation. This empirical study has included the analysis of 10-spin-offs in Costa Rica. The results show that the main factors that contribute to create a spin-off are their abilities to find business opportunities, and that the main problem they face is financial in nature. These results are particularly relevant and useful to academicians, universities and government authorities to promote this type of organization
