Abstract:
Background: In diabetic patients mycotic foot infections are a frequent reason for consultation and are important risk factors for subsequent bacterial infections that can lead to amputations. Objective: To determine characteristics of superficial mycoses in feet of patients with type 2 diabetes who attend an External Consultation of Endocrinology and Dermatology of Vicente Corral Moscoso Hospital in Cuenca in the year 2016. Methodology: A descriptive research was performed. The sample consisted of 181 patients with type 2 diabetes who presented lesions suggestive of superficial mycosis in feet Participants were sampled from the affected areas, a direct potassium hydroxide test was performed and a survey was conducted. Data were collected in forms and data were processed using the SPSS V15.0 program using absolute frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation, which were represented in tables. Results: 97.8% of the patients had positive results for superficial mycosis in feet after the microbiological examination. 57.6% were between 40 and 64 years old, 76.3% were women and 73.4% lived in urban areas. In 60.5% the time course of diabetes was ≥10 years and 39.5% received oral hypoglycemic treatment. In 62.7% showed fasting glucose levels above 130mg / dl and in 68.9% the glycosylated hemoglobin values were ≥7%. 41.2% of the patients were overweight. The most prevalent mycosis location was interdigital - ungueal, with 21.4% where filamentous fungi and yeasts were found together in 10.7%. Conclusions: The vast majority of patients with clinical suspicion of superficial mycosis in feet were positive on direct examination with potassium hydroxide, the most affected were intermediate adults and women. The area most affected was the interdigital-nail region and the type of fungus varied according to the location
