A strategy of conservation for development in Central American tropics

Abstract:

Conservation of natural resources in the tropics implies the development of several strategies. The traditional approach mainly considered the creation of protected areas, severely limiting any kind of productive activity. No systematic evaluation has yet been made of this preservation approach, but there is a consensus that it is not sufficient to achieve all the objectives of conservation. During the last few years a new concept that considers the compatibility of conservation and production has been worked out by several institutions. At present we are developing demonstration cases of conservation for development in protected and non-protected areas. For this purpose we are working with timber and non-timber forest resources, taking into consideration the following dimensions and disciplines.
