Cardiovascular risk factor in nursing professionals


Abstract:

Introduction: Cardiovascular risk factors are habits, pathologies, antecedents, or situations that increase the probability for developing cardiovascular disease. Objectives: To determine the prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors in nurses who work in Homero Castanier Crespo Hospital. Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional, prospective study was carried out with 73 professionals who were applied a questionnaire about personal data and family history. Weight and height were obtained for the calculation of BMI. The blood pressure was measured and the blood sample was obtained for the analysis of the lipid profile and glycemia. Results: 100% belong to the female sex, with average age of 37.23±10.81; 42.5% reported family history of cardiovascular disease, and 60.3% reported sedentary lifestyle; 4.1% smoked. 54.8% presented overweight and 17.8% were obese. High values ​​were detected for total cholesterol, in 5%, LDL-cholesterol, in 2.73%, and triglycerides, in 9.6%. 1.4% presented systolic hypertension grade I, and 12.3% presented diastolic hypertension; of this, 10.9% corresponds to diastolic hypertension I and 1.4%, to diastolic hypertension II. 1.4% presented altered glycemia in fasting. Conclusions: The high prevalence of overweight combined with sedentary lifestyle and increased lipid profile, in a population with a predominance of young adults, indicates that it is urgent to work in the promotion of healthy lifestyles, to avoid that these factors can become predecessors of other pathologies that increase cardiovascular risk.
