Catalogue of moiré fringes for a bi-axially-loaded infinite plate with a hole

Abstract:

The theoretical description of the displacement field around the hole in a bi-axially-loaded plate has been presented for Problem 1, the problem of the bi-axially-loaded infinite plate with a hole; and Problem 2, the residual stress problem. As a result the locus of points exhibiting the same value of displacement component, so-called isothetics, are obtained and plotted for multiple cases of changing far-field stress ratios. This provides researchers with a first approximation to solving the inverse problem, i.e., if we know the moiré fringe distribution around the hole, it is possible to approximate the stresses that produce them. There is no attempt at solving the problems inherent to the use of moiré that need to be addressed and overcome, such as the fact that moiré relies on a pre-oriented grating for its measurement. The inherent limitation of moiré is that the orientation of the principal strain (stress) directions is not known before a hole is drilled on a specimen, therefore making it almost impossible to correctly pre-align the moiré gratings. Finding a solution to this more general problem is basic to seeking an acceptable approach to making the hole-method more amenable to solution by using a moiré approach.
