Causas y consecuencias de la disminución de la dimensión vertical en pacientes geriátricos con edentulismo total.
Abstract:
The most common causes for the decrease of vertical dimension are caries and periodontitis that results in the premature loss of teeth that leads to changes in oral mucosa, skin, phonetic changes, changes in swallowing, changes in the maxillomandibular relationship. In addition, all these causes present a distortion in the vertical relationships which generate a spatial alteration in the position of the jaw. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate these changes in the context of the desired or expected facial support for new dental prostheses. This evaluation is focused on the vertical decrease that is the distance between two selected points; one on a fixed element; and the other on a mobile element. In general, the fixed point is located at the nasal or sub-nasal level and the moving point is located in the jaw at chin level. There is not a universally accepted an available method for measuring vertical dimension (VD) in the clinic, however, there is a series of techniques that individually and collectively can be useful in obtaining and collaborating with VD. Therefore, social economic factors are the main cause of dental decay since individuals do not have the money to buy dental hygiene products. Needless to say, without dental hygiene products, dental health will be poor in the long run; and thus the stomatognathic system will alter the vertical dimension (VD
