Causes and consequences of land-use diversification: Mechanistic and empirical analyses at farm level in the dry forest of Ecuador

Abstract:

Previous studies have demonstrated the importance of land-use diversification to reduce poverty and income risks, but also to improve the level of ecosystem services. This thesis analyzes how mechanistic and empirical approaches to land-use diversification may be combined to identify efficient land-use strategies. The new approach is based on a risk-sensitive economic land-use model and on interview data from 163 households near the Laipuna Reserve in the dry forest of South-Ecuador.
