Cellular Mechanisms and Epigenetic Changes: Role of Nutrition in Livestock
Abstract:
Ample evidence from research with humans and model organisms demonstrates the unique role that epigenetic mechanisms have on basic development, growth, physiology, and health. Epigenetic changes or marks not only are transmitted from cells to cells during cell division, but from mother to offspring and can be compiled into the epigenome. From an environmental standpoint, the recognition that nutrition can alter the profile of the epigenome even among individuals with identical genetic code has increased interest among livestock scientists for a better understanding of the implications of adequate maternal and early life nutrition. In fact, there are broader efforts already in place for accelerating knowledge of genome-to-phenome associations in livestock that are applying core “omics” technologies including RNA-seq. 1 These efforts are instrumental for the study of chromatin architecture, transcription
