Central place foraging in the wheatear Oenanthe oenanthe: an experimental test


Abstract:

(1) An experimental test of two pbkp_redictions of the Orians-Pearson model of central place foraging for multiple prey loaders was carried out with breeding wheatears (Oenanthe oenanthe) in central Sweden. (2) Maggots were offered in artificial patches consisting of ten plastic cups in the territories of two pairs during the period when they were feeding their young in the nest. (3) The increase in handling time of prey with the number of prey already held in the beak was measured in one individual. This loading effect is the underlying basis of the Orians-Pearson model. (4) Experimental patches of the same quality at different distances from the nest were presented. The birds took more prey and spent longer collecting times in the distant patches than in those near the nest, as pbkp_redicted by the model.
