Certifications as a mechanism for innovation: An analysis in manufacturing export of roses
Abstract:
In seeking to improve the products quality, companies implement quality management systems, environmental management systems and socially responsible practices. This set of practices is validated by consumers trough of certifications. As a consequence, in the process for obtaining the certification, companies develop innovations, motivated by the quest to achieve this accbkp_reditation. This article aims to identify if companies that have certifications are more innovate than those that have not adopted such accbkp_reditations. The survey analyzed the amount of rose varieties - considered as an innovativeness indicator - by 62 rose farms in Ecuador, divided into two groups: 44 farms with-certifications and 18 farms without-certifications. For this, we used the test of difference between means (t-test), comparing the number of rose varieties by the two groups. The results show that, even if there is a difference in the number of varieties between the two groups, this difference is not statistically significant. Thus, companies that choose to certify their products, processes or management practices have an equal propensity to innovate to companies that did not adopt certification systems.
