Changes in serum concentrations of selected micronutrients after bariatric surgery
Abstract:
Rationale: Obesity might concur with deficiencies of micronutrients. These deficiencies could affect the effectiveness of bariatric surgery. Objective: To assess the preoperatory status of selected micronutrients in obese patients waiting for bariatric surgery. Study location: “Teodoro Maldonado Carbo” Hospital (Guayaquil, Guayas, Ecuador). Study design: Retrospective, analytical. Methods: Preoperatory serum concentrations of selected micronutrients were retrieved from the clinical charts of 180 subjects (Males: 25.6%; Average age: 39.1±10.4 years; Body mass index: 44.3±7.1 Kg. m-2) included in the worklist of the Bariatric Surgery hospital service (Surgery completed: 26.7%) between 2013–2015. Results: Deficiencies of (in descending order) vitamin B12 (32.2%), folic acid (16.7%), magnesium (13.9%), iron (10.5%), and calcium (2.8%) were found. Preoperatory status of micronutrients was independent from subjects sex and BMI, and the completion of the surgical plan. Bariatric surgery produced a reduction of basal B12 vitamin, iron and calcium. Conclusions: Deficiencies of micronutrientes might be frequent among obese subjects presenting for a bariatric surgery. These deficiencies might translate into clinical pictures such as anemia. Bariatric surgery might also perpetuate| aggravate preoperatory deficiencies.
