Characterization study of the Co-Ag system obtained by mechanical alloying

Abstract:

Mechanical alloying (MA) is one of the methods employed for the synthesis of nanocrystalline alloys. In recent years, this technique has shown to be a versatile tool to prepare solid solutions in binary systems immiscible in equilibrium. The phase diagram of Co and Ag shows that the mutual solubility is very low in both the solid and liquid states. Therefore, no stable alloys of appreciable compositions exist under equilibrium conditions. Mixtures for different compositions of Co-Ag were studied by x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). However, it was found that it is possible to obtain some partial solid solution in this system. This is confirmed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC).
