Cheilitis granulomatosa

Abstract:

Cheilitis granulomatosa is a rare disease of unknown origin that was described by Miescher in 1945. The condition produces persistent swelling of lip and we see nonnecrotizing granulomatous inflammation histologically. We report a 64-years-old man with cheilitis granulomatosa since one year ago; he was treated with dapsone that stabilized the process. The Melkersson-Rosenthal syndrome includes recurrent orofacial edema, recurrent facial nerve palsy and lingua plicata, although complete triad is only present in 25% of patients. Orofacial involvement is the dominant feature. Treatment is difficult; the most therapeutic regimens include corticosteroid therapy, either systemic or intralesional, clofazimine, hydroxychloroquine, surgical reduction, irradiation, antibiotics, salazosulfapyridine, danazol... all of them with temporal benefit.
