Chemical composition and biological activities of Jatropha Curcas

Abstract:

Jatropha curcas L. belongs to Euphorbiaceae family, distributed mainly in México, Central America, India, Ecuador, Perú, Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay and Venezuela. This species synthesize a variety of secondary metabolites such as diterpenes, triterpenes, coumarins, flavonoids, alkaloids, fatty acids, among others. Several investigations have also revealed a wide range of biological properties like antibacterial, antifungal, antiseptic, diuretic, laxative, antimalarial, anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, cytotoxic, insecticide and antioxidant. This chapter summarizes the most important aspects of Jatropha curcas species, in order to enable handle information to the reader. A brief description of the most distinctive taxonomy features, worldwide distribution and biosynthetic pathways of the secondary metabolites commonly isolated from it has been described, as well as a review of different biological activities reported for this species.
