Chronic critical disease

Abstract:

A clinical entity known as chronic critical illness syndrome appears in patients admitted to intensive care units for a long period of time, having survived an acute critical episode but failing to achieve clinical recovery. Its main feature is the presence of prolonged mechanical ventilation or tracheostomy, with inability to wean the patient from ventilatory support, along with other endocrine, immune, neuromuscular and cognitive disorders, and a state of persistent inflammation. This disorder has a big impact on the quality of life of patients and their families, and it significantly increases the annual costs of healthcare. We offer a review of the main clinical features of this syndrome.
