A wide-ranging conservation

Abstract:

When researchers from the Macaulay Land Use Research Institute (MLURI) in Scotland realised that landscape changes in the Orkney Islands had major habitat implications, they looked for ways to predict the effects of those changes. By studying landscape ecology and applying a GIS, they built a wide-area conservation evaluation tool, which they used to study Short-eared Owls on Orkney. More importantly, the approach they used could have a general application to other landscapes.
