A “CLIP” TO REMEMBER IN THE CARE OF SEVERE MITRAL REGURGITATION

Abstract:

BACKGROUND: Evidence suggests that men and women exhibit prodromal symptoms (PS) prior to an acute coronary syndrome (ACS) event. In rural Canada ACS patients wait up to 32 hours for transfer for cardiac catheterization (CATH). Pain arising from ACS is often severe and anxietyprovoking. While waiting, it is critical that pain and anxiety management be optimal to preserve vulnerable myocardial muscle. PURPOSE: 1) To examine the relationship between clinical management, cardiac pain intensity and state anxiety, and 2) to describe the prevalence, frequency and severity of prodromal symptoms in a sample of rural ACS patients. METHODS: In a prospective, descriptive-correlational repeatedmeasures design, with 121 ACS rural patients, we examined the: 1) associations of analgesic and nitroglycerin administration with cardiac pain intensity (numeric rating scale-NRS) and state anxiety (Spielberger …
