Classification of Partial Discharges in Power Transformers Using a Method Based in Partial Areas

Abstract:

Power transformers are fundamental components in an electrical distribution system which should deliver uninterrupted power to users, because of this a good diagnosing of the operational status is important. The estimation of the transformer conditions depends directly on electrical, mechanical, thermal, and chemical stress levels. High levels of stress generate high levels of partial discharges which can cause insulation failures. This work proposes a novel method to detect where a partial discharge happens in a power transformer’s winding using a method based in the calculation of absolute areas of voltage curves and a numerical regression with a polynomial interpolation. All of these in a simulated environment with a determined margin of error instead of the classical methods which are prone to a higher failure rate.
