Classification of student scientific activity in higher medical education

Abstract:

The traits that characterise current trends in the training of health professionals requires that scientific activity plays the role that is appropriate to the training objectives of future professionals. For this reason, the preparation of students for scientific activity in Higher Medical Education Centres must form part of the curricular and extracurricular training that helps them acquire the investigation habits, qualities and skills that will enable them to fulfil the demands of the current teaching models. Although the training of the health professional inevitably includes the learning of research methodology, the model of the student as an investigator oriented towards the scientific method, has not structurally penetrated the design of the curriculum of Health Sciences courses. This situation requires looking for its causes and to direct actions towards advancing student scientific activity in Higher Medical Education, by applying a more coherent focus on this. Thus, this article proposes a classification of student scientific activity in Higher Medical Education that may be considered as an effective tool for the harmonisation of the activities and processes that it covers, revitalises, and defines.
