Clinical cases of demodectic mange in two Holstein calves

Abstract:

Demodex bovis causes demodectic mange in cattle. The disease is widespread in tropical zones but quite uncommon (but most likely underestimated) in temperate regions. The parasites are found in great numbers in the hair follicles, which induce their swelling. Typical skin nodules are formed and represent most of the time the only visible clinical sign. Under certain circumstances, generalized demodecidosis with hair loss can be observed. A case of demodectic mange in two Holstein calves kept for experimental purpose is described. The clinical pattern and the evolution of the lesions are described. The calves recovered without any treatment. The diagnostic hypothesis and the means of transmission of this disease are discussed.
