Clinical characteristics of patients undergoing hemodialysis of the Hospital General del Norte de Guayaquil IESS Los Ceibos


Abstract:

Objective: To determine the clinical characteristics of patients undergoing hemodialysis at Hospital General del Norte de Guayaquil IESS Los Ceibos. Materials and methods: This was a descriptive and retrospective study in patients undergoing hemodialysis at the nephrology department of the Hospital General del Norte de Guayaquil IESS Los Ceibos during the period from January 2018 to April 2018, the clinical data of medical records in statistics department were used. Results: Of the 47 patients evaluated, 72% (n=34) were men, the most frequent age group was 50-64 years with 47% (n=22), the use of temporary catheter was the vascular access strategy more used with 64% (n=30), and the main with infection complications (84%, n=21). The most frequent location of arterio-venous fistulas was the brachiocephalic site 47.1% (n=8), the most common complication was stenosis with 41.3% (n=7), of infection complicated cases the microorganism more isolated was Staphylococcus epidermidis (11.8%, n=2) and vancomy-cin the most used antibiotic with 17.7% (n=3). Conclusion: Patients undergoing hemodialysis at the Hospital General del Norte de Guayaquil IESS Los Ceibos, are predominantly men, over 50 years of age, with temporary catheter as most commonly used vascular access. However, arterio-venous fistulas have a lower complication profile, with stenosis being the most frequent.
