Clinical evaluation of climacteric women

Abstract:

The climacterium damages the quality of life and increases the risks of developing chronic illnesses such as osteoporosis, cardiovascular diseases and cancer. We should take a holistic approach with a climacteric patient and use specific instruments. In order to evaluate the symptomatology we can use the Greene climacteric scale, an instrument designed to evaluate menopause-related symptoms which has psychometric properties. The main cause of death in women is cardiovascular disease, so we should pay special attention to evaluating the risk factors involved and consider menopause as an opportunity to prevent chronic illnesses. At the same time, risk factors for low bone density and fractures will guide us on osteoporotic risk and the need to request bone densitometries. In addition, the risk of breast cancer should be evaluated according to the presence of specific risk factors, for which we can use the Gail model, and to the presence of a higher mammographic density, a well-known risk pbkp_redictor. Hormones, antireabsorptive therapy, hypolipemiants, antihypertensives, antidepressants and so on, are part of the therapeutic arsenal doctors can use to treat and/or prevent the climacteric symptoms. We should encourage better lifestyles by suggesting healthy eating, an increase on physical activity and stopping unhealthy habits such as smoking and/or drinking alcohol. Conclusion: Seeking medical consultation for treating climacteric symptoms should be seen as an opportunity to better the quality of life as well as to evaluate the risks of chronic illnesses and take the right steps.
