ACCURATE STATISTICAL MEASUREMENT OF LOW DGD
Abstract:
We present a fast and reliable method to describe statistically the polarization mode dispersion (PMD) properties of optical fibers. The method relies on repeated measurements of the Differential Group Delay (DGD) with the fiber differently laid, in such a way to explore as thoroughly as possible the space of the DGD values. The chosen deployment ensures that the disturbances due to fiber bend and tension are negligible. Our statistical description allows to highligth the peculiar PMD statistical properties that distinguish detwisted unidirectionally spun fibers with respect to conventional alternately spun fibers. In the case of detwisted unidirectionally spun fibers the adoption of our method permits appreciating the presence of a PMD minimum for a non-zero residual twist.
