Collateral effects on employers' health derived from the COVID-19 pandemic
Abstract:
Globally, social, economic, and labor instability became latent phenomena since the beginning of 2020, when the current COVID-19 pandemic began. In the case of Ecuador, similar to several countries in the region, the current health crisis reduced the availability and access to employment, causing adverse effects on the health and quality of work-life of all members of companies in several productive sectors. The purpose of this study was to establish the collateral effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on entrepreneurs' health linked to footwear production and marketing industry and related products in the province of Tungurahua-Ecuador. This research had a quantitative approach, non-experimental design, cross-sectional, and correlational scope. A reliable questionnaire, validated by expert judgments and statistical methods, was applied to 72 entrepreneurs. Physical, psychological, and emotional health of all the participants were affected. Both self-esteem and the business economic context were the dimensions most impacted under job instability conditions, presenting significant positive correlations with somatization and job burnout, dimensions directly linked to the quality of work-life. This study provides the first evidence on the deterioration of entrepreneurs' health and quality of worklife during the COVID-19 pandemic. This group of people, poorly selected for research studies, currently plays a fundamental role in economic recovery and jobs generation.
