Abstract:

This collected edition of Albert Einstein's published works owes its existence to a suggestion made by the Readex Micro-print Corporation shortly after Einstein's death, In view of the very large number of works which Einstein published over a period of almost fifty-five years, and also because of the inaccessibility of many of his original publications, the Estate of Albert Einstein welcomed the suggestion to prepare this collected edition and is very grateful to the Readex Microprint Corporation for its cooperation and competent assistance. The collection is limited to material actually in print; the publication of heretofore unpublished manuscripts, letters, and other documents has had to be reserved for a later date. Every attempt was made to make the collection as inclusive as possible under the circumstances and to incorporate anything that Einstein ever published over his name, regardless of period, language or country of original publication, and regardless of the form of publication, whether book, scientific journal, magazine or newspaper. The material assembled here is in German, English, French, Spanish, Hebrew, Dutch, Italian, and Japanese, While it is hoped that the collection is practically complete in regard to the original publications of Einstein in German, Eng-lish and French, it was not possible to achieve the same degree of inclusiveness in the other languages despite the serious efforts made. Of the translations of Einstein's writings, only those in German, English and French are included.
