Combination of evolutive algorithms and orthogonal polynomials for the parameterization of the control action. Application to biogas production
Abstract:
In order to encourage the reduction of the fossil fuels consumption and obtain biofuels with competitive prices in the energy market, it is necessary to have economic bioprocesses with high production yields. Residual sludge contains compounds with potential application in environmental engineering, such as the socalled extracellular polymeric substances, which protect cells against environmental factors. In this study, the production of methane in sewage sludge is sought by optimizing the sludge feed profile to the reactor where anaerobic digestion will take place. The optimization of fed-batch bioprocesses is a current challenge, on which we must focus. An innovative method will be applied from which the objective is achieved, through the use of dynamic optimization based on the Fourier series and orthogonal polynomials combined with evolutive algorithms. This tool has the advantages of obtaining smooth profiles (continuous and derivable), which broadens the field of action and avoids overparameterization, since it uses a minimum number of parameters for optimization.
