Abstract:
In a recent article (Population Ecology 47: 119–125), Tryjanowski and coauthors discuss in detail our paper (Moreno et al. 2003) in which we presented a model and data pertaining to the association between means and variances in reproductive success in population studies. They erroneously describe our method of presenting breeding success as a binary variable (0: no success, 1: success, ie at least one fledgling was produced). In the Discussion section, they again insist that our associations of trends in variance with mean reproductive success are due to our use of binary data (pages 123 and 124). These assertions are not true, however. We clearly state at the beginning of our model description (see p. 1225 in Moreno et al. 2003) that ‘‘we envisage breeding performance of each female, or pair, of a population varying continuously in relation to environmental quality.’’Furthermore, we state that in our model …
