Communication and Daily Activities Assistant System for Patient with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis
Abstract:
We present a system based on the eyelids movement to get signals that through the proximity sensor will be sent to the graphical interface developed in the Raspberry PI 3 card using Python. The graphical interface shows a virtual keyboard and a mouse simulation that scrolls for each letter with a determined time, if the mouse cursor is in the desired letter, the patient with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) will be able to select and write by moving the eyelid. Besides, the patient will have the possibility to listen to the written message using the speakers and to control domotically the light, door, window and alarm, via Bluetooth communication. In this way, we facilitate the process of communication with family and medical staff, raising the selfesteem of the patients when doing activities by themselves and not depending totally on the people who look after them. There was also added a webcam that detects the patient's face and let to move the mouse cursor to do the process mentioned above, with the difference that the execution time is faster. The system will provide an economic contribution to society, as it provides services similar to commercial devices, but at a low- cost.
