Community Building. Case Study: Monitoring Water Quality Discharge of Mining Operations of the 12 de Octubre Association (Camilo Ponce Enríquez Canton)


Abstract:

This paper presents the results of the component: Monitoring plan of mining effluents in the mining area of Association of Miners community building project “Gestión del conocimiento geológico, minero-ambiental en beneficio del desarrollo productivo de la Asociación de Mineros Autónomos 12 de octubre (Cantón Camilo Ponce Enríquez) in which professors and students from the schools of Mining, Civil, and Geological engineering participated. The participation of students in projects of community building allow the students to serve as interns in their professional fields but on technical issues different to their coursework and get to know the societal demands, economics and environmental issues of their profession up-close. This will strengthen and gauge the current state of education within the disciplines and institutions. The most current results are search, selection, and synthesis, of the bibliographic and fieldwork information, hydro-chemical and environmental analysis of the water discharges of subterranean mines, and designs for sampling procedures as components of the monitoring plan. This Project has allowed for the collaboration between the university and the mining sector, specifically in performing activities that allow compliance with the current, national environmental legislation promoting ethical and professional responsibility for water conservation. Where the student results are reviewed jointly by the faculty and a representative of the Mining Association.
