Community Early Warning Systems

Abstract:

The community is represented as a network that interacts with society to expose physical and/or social impacts. Early warning is one of the many important tools that contribute to disaster prevention; we can talk about the term "disaster" as any negative event that impacts society. Therefore, a Community Early Warning System (CEWS) represents a set of capabilities required to achieve reliability and information security, minimize the information time, and manage time, human and monetary resources appropriately. Moreover, this is the reason why information technologies have greatly involved in this issue; to enlarge the benefits of a CEWS using new communication, protocols, sensors, etc. For example, smartphones today allow us to have all kinds of sensors within reach of our pocket, without communication of great features currently achieved; this certainly allows an efficient design and implant CEWS. Follows the main points that define and govern a CEWS, and in addition, some projects in different fields are presented demonstrating the efficiency of these systems.
