Community and Family Nursing specialisation program: A reality in Ecuador
Abstract:
Introduction The present network design of specialisation in family and community nursing is based on the Organic Law on Higher Education, guidelines of the Higher Education Council, and the regulations of the participating universities. Objective To train specialists in family and community nursing, as well as developing generic and specific skills for the implementation of the process of nursing care based on scientific evidence and on the model of integrated health care — family, community and intercultural integrated in its attention to the individual, the family and the community on the basis of the ethics act, bioethics, respect of cultural diversity, gender, and human rights. Methods An analytical field study, with a focus on qualitative data, was conducted during the period April-August 2015. The population consisted of the regulations and guideline documents for the formulation of these programs. Inductive-deductive logical practices, and analytical-synthetic methods were used. Results Workshops were held, with wide participation and consensual decision-making, in which an analysis was made of the academic offer at local, regional and international levels, the justification and necessity of its implementation in the country, definition of the duration, mode of study, number of post-graduates, coverage, description, objectives, profile of entry and exit, graduation, and curriculum requirements. Conclusions The implementation of this family and community nursing specialisation program, the participating universities, and others that may use it, is considered necessary for the scientific progress of the discipline, since it provides updates, a deepening, improvement, and expansion of skills required for the performance of this primary health care professional, in accordance with the needs of the economic, social, and cultural development of the country.
