Abstract:

Periodontal disease is presented as a high incidence pathology in Ecuador and for this reason it’s important to gain knowledge about how to stop it’s progression and how to prevent it. The aim of this investigation was to compare two therapeutic alternatives in periodontal disease treatment, mainly with the use of local antibiotics (chlorexidine) and conventional periodontal therapy. 40 periodontal pockets were evaluated, 20 pockets of the first group were treated with conventional periodontal therapy, and the second group was treated with conventional periodontal therapy in combination with local antibiotics (chlorhexidine chip). Evaluation was performed after 30 days to determine clinical changes, reduction of periodontal pockets depth and inflammation decrease.Patients were selected after a previous periodontal diagnosis, teeth were chosen for respective periodontal disease characteristics as 5mm depth pockets, or bleeding. Patients excluded from this investigation were pregnant women, patients suffering systemic diseases, patients over than 18 years old, and individuals with chlorhexidine hypersensitivity. Results showed that there is no significant difference between the two therapeutics applied. Even though, the use of local antibiotics (chlorhexidine chip) helps reducing depth of periodontal pockets, its price is too expensive for its application on daily consult, presenting no significant difference between results obtained in the application of conventional periodontal therapy and periodic controls, given the fact that an adequate root scaling and planning technique could show the same results as using the chip. Chlorhexidine represents the agent of first choice to treat periodontal diseases, but does not substitute mechanical control and proper patient motivation.
