Abstract:
Temporo mandibular disorders (TMD) are prevalent in the population, and its multifactorial etiology. The etiological factors can be grouped into structural, functional and psychosocial problems. Studies show taht 75% of the population and 33% show signs of TMD symptoms. Structural factors such as the asymmetries of the temporomandibular joint components, play an important role. Condylar asymmetry has been studied in different skeletal patterns.Of the three skeletal, skeletal Class II was the most prevalent of asymetry (37.5%). Since the asymetries of condylar process corresponds to a structural factor of risk, you should include assessment of the condylar process in patients seeking orthodontic tratment and a thorough examination in patients with these asymemetries.
