Comparative In-Vitro Activity of Aztreonam and other Antimicrobials against Gram-Negative Hospital Isolates including Pseudomonas aeruginosa
Abstract:
The in-vitro activity of Aztreonam against 251 recent gram-negative bacterial isolates was determined by the Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method. The activity was compared with ampicillin, amoxycillin/clavulanate, cefamandole, ceftazidime, ofloxacin and ciprofloxacln against 197 members of the enterobacteriaceae. Ceftazidime, ofloxacin, ciprofloxacin and amikacin were the drugs compared against 54 Pseudomonas spp. Mean activity of Aztreonam against enterobacteriaceae was 96.44%(190/197) with the least activity exhibited against Proteus spp. at 90.62%"(29/32). The highest activity was exhibited against E. coli (100%, 51/51) and Serratia spp (100%, 10/10). Sensitivity of Pseudomonas spp to Aztreonam was 81.48%(44/45). Aztreonam was the most active drug against E. coli, Klebsiella spp and Citrobacter spp. Aztreonam was equal to ofloxacin with the highest activity against Enterobacter spp (96.62%, 32/33) and Proteus spp (90.62%, 29132). It was also equal to ceftazidime with highest activity against Serratia spp (100%, 10/10). Amikacin was the most active drug against Pseudomonas spp at 87.03%(47/54), followed by aztreonam and ceftazidime at 81.48%(44/45).
