Comparative of three sampling protocols for water quality assessment using macroinvertebrates

Abstract:

The implementation of the Water Framework Directive (WFD, Directive 2000/60/CE) requires the establishment of standardized sampling protocols for the assessment of benthic fauna. In this paper, a comparative study of several sampling protocols that are used currently in Spain and Europe (AQEM, EPA and Guadalmed) has been carried out. Evaluating the three protocols with a list of 12 criteria, Guadalmed fits better to the most of them. Therefore it appears as an efficient tool in the determination of Ecological Status.
