Comparative study of endoparasitosis in canines in two localities of the ecuadorian coast

Abstract:

Puerto López canton, in Manabí province and Guasmo Sur sector in Guayaquil – Guayas province -, are two rural localities of the Ecuadorian geography where the criterion related to responsible pet ownership is poorly applied, this is associated to several factors such as: lack of knowledge, deficient education of the owners, complex socio-economic and climatological conditions common to these two sectors of the Ecuadorian coast; even more so when these study areas were seriously affected by the earthquake that occurred in April 2016. Samples were directly taken from the rectum of 120 dogs of each locality, which were put through coproparasite tests, by using concentration technique through centrifugation (Ritchie Technics), and prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites were determined. Results were statistically analyzed by using the square Chi independence test (X2) among positive animals to endoparasites and variables, such as race, sex, habitat, body status and presence of ectoparasites. In Puerto López canton a prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites was found to be 64.2% (77/120), with Ancylostoma spp., being the parasite with the highest prevalence, followed by Toxocara canis. In Guasmo Sur sector, 50.8% of samples analyzed (61/120) were found to be positive to gastrointestinal parasites, followed by Ancylostoma spp. And Dipylidium caninum. Only 1.7% (2/120) of samples taken in Puerto López, showed a mixed infestation of Ancylostoma spp. and Toxocara canis. Body status showed a value p=<0.05 in Puerto Lopez, which demonstrated a statistical association between the existence of endoparasites and referred variable.
